Have a question (or an answer) about hurricanes or other weather? El Nino? Tornadoes?

Criteria for Retiring Name

Postby Adriana » Mon Sep 12, 2011 10:53 am

I know that hurricane names are retired when they are 'devastating'. Can anyone provide more details as to the exact criteria? i.e. a certain number of people killed, property damage, etc.
Will Irene be retired after the 2011 Season?

I don't believe there are set criteria, but I suspect that Irene will not be retired.

Andrew and Katrina are good examples of lots of devastation and I don't think Irene came close - although certainly lots of people were without power etc.
