I guess that just proves that society doesn't improve with technology. *sigh*
You would think that in modern society people would be more tolerant. This is just sad. We're not living in the Middle Ages anymore.

In Romania as late as the early 90s, a young girl committed suicide and after her funeral, the town elders dug her up and put a wooden stake through heart, because suicide is one of the ways you become a vampire.

I've always though about this. If back in the 18th and 19th century you know someone in your family or someone you were close too and they commit suicide. Are you putting a stake through her heart because you really believe she will become a vampire, or is this a more personal type of bizarre act of contrition on your part?

This person ended their life and you were unable to stop it or maybe even see it. Maybe you feel so guilty for not being able to help that this staking is some way you're trying to absolve yourself from the feelings you have about letting it happen.

I couldn't help her in life and I feel awful. So now I fall back on superstition to try and ease my conscious by helping her in her after life.

Just a thought.

I'm of the opinion that most humans still have one foot in the forest and the other (barely) in the present.

Mass dissemination of information leads to political awareness which tends to upset the people who want to control others and we can't have that now, can we?
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.
