Don't Miss the World Cup!

Post by Kolchak » Mon Jun 16, 2014 8:08 pm

Just watched the US of A squeak by Ghana 2-1. I know soccer isn't big here, but I enjoy it and this only happens once every four years. Soccer is a fun sport with easy to follow and understand rules. If you get a minute, watch a match or two.

No. The US will not win. But it's still fun to watch the various countries play. As it stands now, my early money is on Holland and Germany.

"Futbol been bery bery gude to me".

USA fans looked well represented, and I watched it on BBC1 which I assume wasn't as biased as ESPN. I had planned on heading to the ballpark and watching it on the big screen but they cancelled the festivities today and tomorrow out of respect to Tony Gwynn.

Yea it was sad about Tony Gwynn. I saw him play several times here in Atlanta when he was with San Diego. He was the same age as me, so he wasn't old. He blamed his cancer on dipping tobacco and it was probably true. I know several guys who dipped heavily and had mouth cancer later in life. He was a heck of player and deserved to be a first ballot into the Hall of Fame.

Not only a great player, he was an excellent person. Everything we all should aspire to. You'd be hard pressed to find anything bad said or written about him. In fact, I bet you can't. There's pretty much no doubt it was the chewing tobacco that brought on the cancer. He was 54. Can't believe we lost Jerry Colman and Tony the same year.

BTT: Lot of disappointed people around here today that Mexico could only come up with a draw against Brazil.

Yea, I watched the match too. It looked like we might pull off the upset, but it was not to be. I still think if Landon Donovan had been on the US team, we would have one. Jozy Altidore will be ready for Germania and I'd love to win, but I'll settle for a tie, but I fear for the worst!      :eye: :eye: :eye: :eye: :eye:

Just finished watching the Mexican game. Looks like they're moving on to the next round. I'm not sure about the scenario that allows the US to move on.

Gotta give Ronaldo credit, that guy is good! He was playing hurt.

Edit: Just stumbled across this...

That is so disappointing, only $79 in coupons?
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

2-1. We got further this time than last. I still think if Landon Donovan had played. We'd have done better!!

Overall, it was an exciting game. Newsfeeds everywhere are talking about Tim Howard and about how the Americans wouldn't give up. We should be proud.

Tim Howard played like a man possessed. That was the most number of saves in 50 years. He was past being awesome, he was crazy good. Unfortunately he needed some help from his offense. Even if you're the best pitcher on the planet, unless you can get up and bat, after 9 innings the best you can hope for is a tie, and Belgium was just too persistent to allow that.

I think with Landon, Jozy and Clint all on the pitch we might have made it one more round. I guess I have to cheer now for little Costa Rica, since they're the true underdogs. But I still think Argentina is the best right now with Germany and Brazil neck and neck.
