Pumpkin Growing - Bigger Prize Announced

Post by OktoberFest » Sun Sep 13, 2009 3:16 pm

The Half Moon Bay Great Pumpkin Weigh-off announced they are increasing the grand prize from $5.00 to $6.00 each pound for 2009. Given what the big ones weigh that's about a $1,000 increase in the end. :shock:

Too bad my pumpkins are such puny things.

WOW we grew a 100 lb pumpkin last year!! that'd be like $600!! why can't i hear about stuff like this here?
Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

That's great! When I take into consideration how much time the growers out into growing these pumpkins they deserve the money! :D

yea pumpkins take time. we have over 10 acres of pumpkins on our farm in beulah alabama :) i have all the pumpkins i could ever want. growing the big ones is technique really, that is if you want good shape and color. other than that, its just snapping off the vines of the surrounding pumpkins in certain places so that your soon to be prize pumpkin gets all the nutrients from its vine and the others :)

Last weekend the first pumpkin patches opened up and we picked up our first pumpkins of the season. I've got a few ideas for arving designs that would be nice, but nothing tha really "WOWs" me. Anyone have any fresh ideas? Any photos of pumpkins that you did in prior years I could use for inspiration?

By the way, most of the home magazines have their Halloween issues out. Sunset Magazine, for example has a few pages of ideas for your pumpkins.

Was there any problem with pumpkin blight where you arew adrian? I heard real bad things up here in New York about growing problems this year., but it doesn't seem to be bringing up the price of them on the market.

not really. Pumpkins are extremely common down here. in matter of fact, half of my friends, as well as people i don't know (i'm sure of this) steal pumpkins from our patch every year and we barely notice lol
