My Witch Costume

Post by DemonSlayerMau » Fri Oct 02, 2009 7:25 pm

As I mentioned on the forum before, I have decided to be a witch this year.
I have a black blouse and skirt I plan to wear, but I need a witch hat. I'm not sure if I should go crazy and get stuff like stockings and high heels or not, I'm not even sure what else to use to complement my costume, some black lipstick and nail polish perhaps? I'm not looking to be an ugly witch. Just y'know, a witch. And I'm on a low budget.
But here's the deal, at Walmart their witch hats are really expensive, they're 8 bucks for one! At the local wegmans I could get one for five bucks. I never knew it was so expensive to get a witch hat.
Does anyone know where I could find a good witch hat for a decent price? Most of the ones I saw were all really fancy, but all I'm looking for is your traditional standard black pointed witch hat. You know what I mean. Five bucks would probably be the maximum I would want to spend, I can't believe it's so much just for a hat!
I see some at Dollar stores, but they're all child size.
This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,
A ghost tried to approach me and got leery.
Ask him a question and he vanished in a second...

i love witches and girls these days just don't do witches anymore :( at least not around here
Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

Really? Where my mom works they dressed up last year for Halloween. The majority of the people she worked with dressed as witches.

Hi Mau, I found a witch hat on Amazon.com for $2.88, it's just plain black. Here's the link

Are there any party stores in your area? Party City might have one... check the Craft stores or Hallmark stores as well. I saw some neat hats at Hallmark this weekend... I ended up getting distracted by the Halloween cards...

I have a witch hat I love-- found it at JoAnn's Craft in 2006... so... just "look around"... you're bound to find one somewhere.

I found one at Target during my long Hour and a half trip to school today for only 2.99! No shipping or handling to worry about either. I snatched it right up. It's kind of cheap, but better than nothing.
I saw some at the Dollar store but none of which I really wanted, they didn't really have the traditional witch look.
But this one is a nice slick black color. It fits real nice too, and it'll suit me for this year's costume. I just hope it won't be a windy Halloween this year, because I have a feeling the hat will fly right off my head if I'm not careful! Haha. Thanks for all your advice though. I'd been looking all over the place. I didn't check at Rite Aide yet, but I'm happy with what I found. Now watch I'll go there and find a better deal. XP
However, I could still use some advice on other accessories. I'll probably get some black lipstick, but should I get some fake fingernails, stockings and dress shoes?
Maybe a wig?

I know how difficult it is to find the perfect witch hat... it has to "fit". The one I found in 2006 really fits my personality-- it has a curly tip. If I get a chance, I'll take a photo and post.... you can sort of see it in this photo:

I like it Jadewick, and I love how the bags are lit up leading to your house. A bit off topic here but I'd love to see more pictures of your display if you have them!
You're absolutely right about finding the perfect one. The one I found isn't necessarily perfect, but it's best suited to me for the price at the moment. The other hats were just too fancy or too expensive. While I've found some at walmart I really liked, they were out of my price range. Perhaps if I decide to be a witch again someday, I'll get a better hat. Or just reuse the one I have.

Witch hats can be really tricky. It's certainly a statement. Maybe I'm just really attached to mine and a bit silly here, but I think buying the right witch hat is a really personal moment for anyone. I remember spending $20 on my hat several years ago and I couldn't believe i let myself spend that much money on a hat! But I absolutely love it and haven't seen anyone else with it, so I really feel like it's mine. Even if I don't wear it on Halloween, I always display it because I think it's elegant. :D

BTW, traditional witch costumes are so amazing. I love seeing girls dressed up as witches. Not scary witches, just your classic witch with a broom. I love it!
I've met The Great Pumpkin.

You could punch up your look a little by using deep red lipstick and nail polish, or a rich purple.
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

I was thinking black lipstick. I don't think I'll go too crazy since I've got a budget to think about.
But hey, at least I'm making an effort to have a decent costume. Some years I had to do something at the last minute and just put on a pair of cat ears.
