what is this steampunk I keep reading about?

Non-Halloween related stuff. Same rules: family oriented, no flaming, be nice. ;-)

.
Steampunk is taking everyday objects and modifying them so they look like they belong in
the era of steam power. Late 1800s, early 1900s. They usually have a Victorian look to
them. I've seen people do it with furniture, computers, toys, cars, ect. Nothing is
safe.

Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

Steampunk is a subculture that combines elements from the Victorian era (late 1800s to early 1900's) with post-apocalyptic punk. It's a clash of old and new technology. Think Jules Verne (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea/Time Machine)... and combine it with awesome.

... and everyone has a different definition.

I've been into it for a little over a year-- not SERIOUSLY into it-- but I've been debating about switching my 2010 Halloween theme from 1880's Old West to Steampunk... and I have the strange and sudden urge to make an 1880's walking dress... and now I'm thinking about modding it to look more "steampunk".... >_<

There's even a Steampunk music subculture out there. YouTube anything by Abney Park
http://www.abneypark.com/

Most people think goggles and gears when they think Steampunk.... there's a lot of it out there if you know where to look.

Also, the Girl Genius comic is Steampunk... and movies like "City of Ember" or "Golden Compass" have elements of Steampunk

I saw a Halloween prop that was made mostly of wood but was painted to look like old riveted, rusty metal and so on, the title was "steampunked" and I was like "WTF is steampunk" I had heard the term before as well and I think iHaunt even posted something with "Steampunk" in the title

I posted a link to a site where you can buy modified PC's and laptops, even kits for DIYers.

They look like something caught in a time warp.

I'd try it myself but I'm not too good around machine tools and would probably end up as part of the project.

The laptop case with the old clock gears on the top is something I would buy, but it's probably not in my price range.

I like the look of precision metal but would almost hesitate to drop in a computer in something that nice because they get replaced often enough to maybe be a pain in the neck.

Maybe a TV?
