impact of hurricanes on society

Hey there!!! Im a student from Singapore, south east asia. Im doing a research on the impact of hurricanes on society. My country has never encountered any hurricanes nor tropical storm, thus my knowledge on hurricanes are limited.

Could anyone out there help me out?
Here are some questions i would like to ask:
1- How does hurricanes or tropical storms affect society, financially, emotionally etc?
2- What are the preparations made to survive these hurricanes?

After a few minutes of reading, you'd be amazed to discover that after nearly a year
most of us still haven't recovered.

Similar things happened in South Florida after Andrew. And the west coast of Florida after Wilma/Ivan etc.

While you may get the basics back relatively quickly, full recovery takes much longer.
