I'm both A+ and Network+ certified, I went to work for MSN after I was certified and started as level 1 tech support in the call center, I hated it, worst job ever.....The type of people that generally call for tech support are the type of people that shouldnt be allowed to own a computer....OMG.....
I then went to a level 3 tech support and quit one day into it.....call center work sucks <deleted>.
Defiantly get into hands on work if you can, it MUCH better....I liked doing computer repairs and support one on one but over the phone with a time limit? screw that.
Good luck on your career!

Re: Training class
I hear you Spooky. I don't want to work in a call center either but at this point I don't have a choice. I don't plan on this being a long term thing. But I also said that about my last employer and I was there a month shy of 16 years. It didn't help that this state went through a recession years before the rest of the nation and there just weren't any jobs for years.
I have been unemployed since April 25 2012. And I have had zero income this whole year. The company that will be running the call center specializes in placing people with disabilities. Which might make a better work environment for me since I have Aspergers Syndrome. I can't have supervisors change things on me without any warning. In fact both of the call centers they are setting up here are going to staffed only with people with disabilities.
The same company has another call center in Lansing, Michigan. I am in Grand Rapids. And they are having trouble keeping people even at more than $18/hr. Once they get experience they move to some place else where they can make even more.
There will be two call centers . One will be servicing calls from the Dept of Agriculture and will have 15 levels of calls eventually. And the other one will be servicing the Dept of Defense (Defense Logistics Agency). Honestly I am hoping that I might be able to stay on with the company I do the internship with.

That's so true! Friend called me last night upset because her computer was running real slow. If there's one thing I definitely suck at, it's diagnosing computer problems without being hands on, especially when the person on the phone is totally computer illiterate. Whatever you do Boogyman, don't let your friends know you grok computers. Good luck!Spookymufu wrote:I'm both A+ and Network+ certified, I went to work for MSN after I was certified and started as level 1 tech support in the call center, I hated it, worst job ever.....The type of people that generally call for tech support are the type of people that shouldnt be allowed to own a computer....OMG.....

That sounds pretty awesome Andy. Although I went to public school, they usually still decorated for most holidays. Of course there weren't anything like Nativities, but they would have things like Santa Clauses, and I think the Halloween stuff was low key, nothing too scary. It's fun to see what the elementary kids do I think.
Although I wasn't considered tech support or anything like that, I did work at an Out Sourced company called Sitel for about a year and a half before moving to Virginia. Some of the customers were really frustrating and my job was to help them navigate the Verizon Wireless website with the prospect of getting cell phone sales out of it. Some of them thought I was tech support for their phones and that's where things could get messy. Some of them got really mad when I gave them the Customer Service number, but that's the thing, I was sales, not Customer Service. Now I didn't do this on the phone though, I did it in the online chats on the VZW website. People often got so confused about where to go on that website, that I have to say I agree, there are just some people who would be better off not using a computer. So I know what you guys mean there when it comes to that sort of thing.
Still, I almost rather go back to something like that than continue working the job I have now. At least some of the co-workers were awesome. One of those co-workers sadly, was the friend who died this year.

I finally st art this job on February 2nd. This is my last week in my current job. This isn't exactly what I want to do, but it is difficult to turn down the money being offered. Also, this call center won't even be open past 6 p.m. or on weekends. I am a bit nervous about being on the phones though.
