Halloween Spending Returns to '08 Levels
GDA Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 9/27/2010 1:11:38 PM

Washington — There will be plenty of ghosties and ghoulies out for Halloween this year as consumer spending on Halloween products — costumes, candy and decorations — is expected to return to 2008 levels, according to a survey conducted by BIGresearch for the National Retail Federation (NRF). According to NRF's 2010 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, Americans will spend $66.28 on costumes, candy and decorations, up from last year's $56.31 and comparable to the $66.54 average spend in 2008. Total spending for the holiday is expected to reach $5.8 billion.

Of their Halloween budget, consumers are expected to spend the most on costumes, an average of $23.37, followed by candy ($20.29), decorations ($18.66) and greeting cards ($3.95).

Noted NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay, "This year, people are expected to embrace Halloween with even more enthusiasm, and will have an entire weekend to celebrate since the holiday falls on a Sunday."

This year, the highest percentage of people in the survey's history will dress up for Halloween: 4 out of 10 people (40.1 percent). And 11.5 percent will dress up their pets as well. Additionally, 33.3 percent of people will throw/attend a party, nearly three-quarters (72.2 percent) will hand out candy, 31.7 percent will take their children trick-or-treating and half (50.1 percent) of consumers celebrating will decorate their home or yard.

Halloween is a rejuvinator, a once yearly power boost, a therapy if you will. Well worth the money spent.
The dark night beckons. Bear us your soul, it whispers. Expose your wicked delights. Join the rest of us on the wind. The dark night beckons and we answer. Sailing into the shadows.
