Halloween: The Search for the Fountain of Youth

Post by Snoopy/Red Baron » Mon Oct 13, 2008 1:47 am

I think that a big part of my love for Halloween is my attempt to hold on to my childhood (with varying degrees of success). For those of you who feel the same way, what do you do to accomplish this? How effective has it been?

I used to think so as well but it occurred to me that I'm not trying to recapture my childhood, I'm just not letting adulthood get too serious.

At the end of my life I want to recount all of the fun I had; not reconciling my bank book.
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

I am a flaky artist/graphic designer so I am allowed my flights of fancy. So I don't consider it holding on to my youth but improving upon it.

That's a rather loaded question, because I'm almost 48 years old, and have seen many a Halloween come and go. But I can't really say that I'm actualy holding on to my childhood, but rather holding on to some of the traditions that helped to make my childhood a happy one.

For me, Halloween begins on the last two or three days of September, and ends on the 3rd of November, as it will this year. I will carve a couple more Jack O'Lanterns before October is out, and all my decorations, including the carved pumpkins will stay up through All Saints Day and All Souls day. Alas, on November 3rd, everything comes down for the year and I begin my Christmas cleaning.

BUT, there's allways mini Halloween when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday. In 2009, there are 3 mini Halloweens. February 13th, March 13th and November 13th. I won't be taking those days off from work, but I will watch a horror movie, and put out one of my plastic Jack O'Lanterns, however. And since all of those dates are Fridays, I most likely won't have to worry about work the next morning. There's allways the possibility of a video shoot or photo shoot on some event planned for a Saturday, but who knows.

Well I was looking in my Outlook calender. In 2017, October 13th falls on a Friday. That means, IMHO, that there will be two Halloweens that year. A rare treat in deed.

I'm not trying to hold onto my childhood (I've got you beat Pumpkin man by 4 years), but I am trying to hold onto my children's. My daughters are still young (12 and 14) and keeping up with them has kept me young at heart.

That's the way I look at it, even though I don't have any kids of my own, I get just as much fun out of giving candy away as I use to get when I got it. Halloween is a chance for everyone to have a great time. Other holidays are more or less geared for either adults or kids. The 4th of July, for instance, requires more adult supervision because of the fire works. Christmas is really more geard for kids, but Halloween is for everyone alike.
