I remember Goosebumps. My older boy (now 22) was really into those books when he was in the second grade. Then the TV series came a year or so later. R. L. Stine, right?

I think creativity is a central draw for those of us who love Halloween. As I said, for me, it is the great holiday of imagination. All of you are talking about different "triggers" for you, but one constant seems to be a strong creative streak.

Andy, I love your description of your childhood home and experiences!

I don't think I ever watched Goosebumps. I read the books when I was a kid and then Fear Street when I got a little older. Those were the days 8)

I've been into Halloween for as long as I can remember. Anything spooky-scary-paranormal.

To start off with, I remember the pumpkins going up for sale at the corner farm stand over on 111th and Central Park. I have a lot of childhood memories of that. But I guess my real interest in the scary aspect of Halloween started when I got into the show "Dark Shadows." It was through creatures of the night like Barnabas the vampire, Angelique the witch, Quentin the wearwolf, and a whole host of spirits, and two creepy old houses complete with secret passages, that got me into the true Halloween spirit.

Hallowen, however didn't become my favorite holiday until I was an adult. Let's face it. When you're a kid, nothing beats all the fabulous toys that come on Christmas morning, so through my entire childhood, Halloween was a very much loved day, but Christmas was my fave. Then when I grew up, things changed, and now Halloween is my absolute favorite day of the year, with the 4th of July ranking a very close second.

I still love Christmas a lot. It's no longer about gifts for me, of course. In fact, there have been years when my husband and I have had to forgo gifts for each other so we could give to the kids. But it is a beautiful season, and in my middle age, I have become very attracted by the religious mystery of it. And, as is true of Halloween, I keep Christmas as a season, not merely a day.

I say that Halloween is my second favorite holiday, though my husband accuses me of loving it the best. I love them both. The holiday season definitely starts for me in October.

I love halloween for three reasons:
1. CANDY- I think I could live off candy and never get sick of it
2. I love scary movies, tv shows, books, etc
3. I love dressing up :)

Don't get me wrong, Murf. I still love Christmas, but it's not my favorite any more. Halloween is my absolute favorite with the 4th of July a close 2nd. Christmas, however has slipped into 6th or 7th place over the years, because of my own family's lack of tradition and totaly secular celebration of the holiday. to me, Christmas is CHRISTmas. I don't know what they can call it, but it's certainly not Christmas the way they do it. I don't want to bore you with all the details, though. It's a long story, and I don't need to tie up good server space with it. I just with that we could go back to celebrating Christmas with all of the beloved traditions that I was raised with.

Jean12, I also like the candy, and other treats. Karmel apples are another love of my October life, and are a big part of my celebration of Halloween. Scary movies are a definate part of it, but I watch scary movies all year round, not just October. I would say my number 1 favorite Halloween tradition is carving jack o'lanterns. When I catch that first wiff of that fresh pumpkin smell, I am reminded of some of my most fond Childhood memories.

I think its just because I feel like I'm really being myself on Halloween and really all throughout October. The movie "The Worst Witch" was one thing that really had me obsessed as a kid though.
