The First Pumpkin You Ever Carved

Post by Pumpkin_Man » Fri Oct 22, 2010 4:48 pm

Hi Folks:

With Halloween less then 2 weeks away, and all the talk of pumpkin carving and the like, I thought I would post abut the very first time I carved my own pumpkin. My parents were very strict about kids using sharp knives, probably because we've all cut ourselvs pretty bad over the years. Anyway, I was 10, and Halloween of 1970 was approaching, and it was time to go to the farm stand on the corner of 111th and Central Park to pick out our Halloween pumpkins. They had a huge veriety in all different shapes and sizes. My younger sister and I picked out 4. I thought about it, and on the way home from that farm stand, I asked my parents if I could carve one on my own this year. They said that I could have to have help with the "hat," but I could clean out the "guts" my self and cut out the face using the smaller knife. So my Dad cut out the "hat," and cut a "chimney" hole for the candle smoke. After I cleaned it out. I took a black crayon and drea a traditional trangle eyes and nose, and mouth on it, and proceaded to carve it out. It turned out okay for my first try, but it was also pretty obvious that it was a first try. No matter, it was still my first jack o'lantern, and I did it myself.

I carved my own every year since then.

How about you guys. How old were you when You started crving your own pumpkin for Hallowen? What kind of a face did you carve on it?

Mike

I was younger than 10 to be sure with older siblings watching out for me.
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

I honestly don't even remember. Our mum carved the pumpkin every year, and we'd all gather round to watch. I probably started carving some time around when I was ten or eleven... I know I carved one when I was twelve; that was my Punisher pumpkin. In fact, that might have been my first one.

I was 9 and my dad didn't want us to carve anything scary or devil like, so he had us carve Christian themed pumpkins. My brother carved a cross and I carved 'Jesus'. They were smashed sometime that night

I was nowhere near Boston that night, and I have six witnesses who'll testify to that.

It's terrible that some one would smadh your pumpkin even if they don't agree with it. I do see pumpkins with crosses and Jesus figures carved in them a lot.

My first was a very traditional jack o'lantern with the triangle eyes, triangle nose and a jaggad mouth.

I dont remember the first one I ever carved but one stands out more then any other in my mind. I was at the kitchen counter carving a traditional pumpkin, and I had the butcher knife stuck in it cutting out the eye, I was pushing the knife trying to push it through and my pumpkin guts slimmed hand slipped off the handle and went right down the blade of the knife slicing two of my fingers wide open. My mom was sitting at the table and freaked out when she realized what happened. I still have the scares on my fingers....

Often there's no reason why kids smash pumpkins other than just mischief. I had a pumpkin smashed once but I was more upset by the loss of a brass candle-holder than the pumpkin. I guess they were just jealous of my talent. :)

Spooky, all I can say is OUCH! I had a simuilar experience when I was cutting an old extensin chord with a butcher's knife. (VERY bad choice of tools to use for this) Anyway, the knof sliped and I cut a huge gash in my thumb. I also still have a skar.

I thought Smashing Pumpkins was a rock band. NARF NARF
