This happened when I was about 8 or 9, which would be 1968 or 1969. Anyway, I was dared to ToT at the home of this elderly gentleman who was said to be 'bum.' (For those of you who do't remember, a bum is Mt. Greenwood's version of a wearwolf). Anyway, I was terrified, but I was also tired of being picked on, so I took them up on the dare. I went up to the house. It didn't have a door bell, but a door knocker instead. I used it, the old man came to the door, and I held out my bag and said "Trick or Treat. He geve me not one, not two, but THREE, count em, THREE 2 pound Hershey bars with almonds, and a 1 dollar bill. (In the 60s, a buck bought more then 10 bucks buys today) "Thanks for visiting me." he siad, "and thanks for dispelling this 'bum' nonsense for once and for all."
He became the number one destination for ToTers after that happened.

One year, when I was probably 11 or 12, my best friend and I went TOTing her aunt's new neighborhood, which was like millionaires row--a huge gated community with absolutely enormous houses. Every house we went to was handing out full size bars and one woman actually was handing out little pumpkin containers that were filled with candies. We cleaned up that night, but we also scared ourselves silly because there was one house that wasn't handing out candy and it just looked creepy. The house had a line of narrow windows up on the top floor and this was where the only light was coming out of and it was blue. Then we saw a shadow pass in the windows and we got scared and ran--we figured a vampire lived there. It was the only logical conclusion at the time

I guess I don't really have a favorite, but we did live close to a retirement trailer park community when I was growing up, and that was my favorite place to go. They had one big community bucket out at the entrance, and they would give you a WHOLE HANDFULL of what I know now was 'penny candy'; but I thought I struck it so rich when I'd go there!

There was a guy who lived on his own in my street. He was rumoured to own a shotgun. My friends & I knocked on his door, but heard his dog barking like crazy that we ran away as fast as we could. I remember being so frightened. The adrenaline rush was amazing though!
We still got plenty of candy though from the other houses!
Not a great story, but thought i'ld share.

LOL! I guess in England it's a big deal that some guy was rumored to own--gasp!--a shotgun. In the American South, you can pretty much assume that every house has some kind of firearm, and many of them have several.

Not just the south...
Hunting is HUGE here in Wisconsin too...I own a few firearms and I have friends that all own firearms...rifles, shotguns and handguns...just a way of life out here.

Yeah the law's very strict over here on gun control. I'ld like one for home defence personally. You never know when you may need it.
