Of course since your friend scared the skunk t will sprayed. However if you're just sleeping skunks shouldn't spray. Unless you are a violent sleeper and startle it when it happens to be close. Though even then I would think it would avoid going to close where you would get the chance.
I mentioned on another thread where skunks were mentioned that on my college campus(sigh I miss college) it was located in a wooded area. We had a number of skunks that would walk within three feet of you and not think anything of it because they were so acclimated to us. I've always kind of liked skunks and as long as it's more far off I actually kind of like the smell of skunks.
