When did vampire stories stop being about murdering people and drinking their blood?

You know, I think the vampire has always been subliminally erotic. Even in the original Dracula novel, if you read it and try to imagine how it first seemed to the English culture of the 1890s, it is very suggestive. I think more recent story-tellers have just developed something that was always there.

Somebody upthread mentioned Frank Langella, who did make a Dracula movie in the '70s, but it was after he had played Dracula on Broadway in the very famous Edward Gorey-designed set (not used in the movie, alas). Anyway, my husband saw that production in Chicago, when Jeremy Brett (aka Sherlock Holmes) was playing the lead. And he has never stopped talking about how fabulous Brett was in that role. From viewing his brilliant interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, I have no doubt he was as great as my husband says. Wish I'd seen that, but my husband & I didn't know each other back then.

I've read all the Twilight books, as has my 12-yr-old daughter, and we saw the first movie. I promised her I'd take her to the second one this weekend. I enjoyed the books, which are basically romance novels for teenagers. As far as juvenile fiction series go, I think Harry Potter is better written and a richer world all around. However, the Twilight saga kept me turning the pages to see what happened next. And for the record, I was a team-Jacob when I was reading it, even though it was obvious that Bella & Edward were the lead couple. But Jacob just seemed more normal to me (well, before he started turning into a wolf, which happens about halfway through the second novel). Something about Edward just seemed a little too unrealistic. I mean, Bella is the focus of his universe. I think that's the sort of thing young girls think they want, but it would be a nightmare in real life to have a guy so focused on you that nothing else in the world mattered to him. I liked that Jacob was into motorcycles, too, and could kid around. My daughter, of course, was team Edward, but thank God she doesn't do the posters in her bedroom. Those are kind of creepy-looking to me.

You don't want to see me dance....that could be dangerous. I'm 41 and white...actually I'm not a bad dancer but mostly Latin Rythms(Merengue, Cumbia, Salsa)...but it's been quite awhile.

Any of the other kind of dancing...Hmmmm I better be three sheets to the wind. LOL
